Psalms 37:4 (NASB) Delight yourself in the LORD; And He will give you the desires of your heart.
‘First things first’, most of us have heard this saying a time or two in their life. It’s usually used when we want to make sure that we do things in the proper order and not skip over something that’s very important. I find it to be more than appropriate in the context of our spiritual walk. Many of us want the blessings of God in our lives. We all want to be in good health, prosperous, have great families and live a godly life; but what are we will to do to obtain it! I’m convinced that we must first begin to put God first in our life. The word ‘delight’ in Hebrew (hepes) means to ‘bend towards, or to incline towards’. Every believer should delight or bend towards God and godly things. If we put God first then He can trust us with the desires of our hearts.
Before God can trust you with ‘stuff’, He has to make certain our desires are inclined towards Him. Once our heart has been changed, we can then handle the ‘things’ that we will receive. We have to get the ‘first things first’.
So how do we delight ourselves? I’m glad you asked! We can start first with having a commitment to a personal prayer life. We are encouraged to pray without ceasing! Secondly, we should look to serve others. When we serve others it brings us closer not only with God, but with those who are in need. We forget about our ‘issues’ or they begin to seem much smaller in comparison to others when we are being used by God. Finally, but most importantly find your purpose. It will provide you with a passion and drive to overcome any obstacle that you may face in life.
Once you begin to delight yourself, you will find that your desires are no longer what they used to be. Now your desires are aligning with God’s desires and it’s all because you put ‘first things first’.
